Thanksgiving and the McCune Family Reunion

Two days before Thanksgiving was Kyle's birthday (Nov. 26).  We celebrated by going out to dinner at The Rusty Moose (yummy!) and then having a little family party for him at home.  Then on Wednesday, we made the trek to Oregon.  It felt wierd to be headed toward Oregon, but not "going home" anymore.  The kids did pretty well on the drive, and we made it out to the coast in about eight hours.  Thus began a wonderful 3 1/2 days with the McCune Ohana! (Mom and Dad; Christine, Scott, Alyssa and Tristan; Parvin, Maile, Caleb, Alohi, and Bridgette; Logan, Shayla and Ansley, and our family.)

We all rented a house together near Netarts Bay, just a few miles south of Tillamook.  The beach house was just a short drive north of Cape Kiwanda, which is where my family went on vacation over Christmas break every year.  It felt so great to be going back again.  The weather was beautiful, especially the first day we were there.  It was amazing weather for the Oregon Coast, especially in November.  It felt sooo warm and we loved it!  Logan found us a beautiful home to rent that worked great for all of us to relax and enjoy being together.  It even had the Master bedroom on the main floor, which turned out to be a huge blessing since Kyle's mom had recently broken her ankle, undergone reconstructive surgery, and was in a wheelchair.  Many beach homes can't accomodate wheelchairs, but this one did.

Wednesday evening, we celebrated Kyle and Kylene's birthday.  I was assigned dinner that evening, so as soon as we arrived, I started making spaghetti and French Bread.  I turned on the oven to heat up for the French Bread.  About 15 minutes later, I opened it to put the bread in and got a face full of smoke.  Kyle's mom had made him a beautiful carrot cake and put in all 39 candles, then hid it in the oven so Kyle wouldn't see it!  Oh, no!  The candles were completely melted and hot wax was all over the cake and oven.  It was a huge mess and I felt horribly.  But, we cleaned up, made the most of it and still enjoyed celebrating.  There's a picture below of the wax-covered cake.

On Thanksgiving morning before stuffing ourselves with food, we went on a hike at Cape Lookout. Here is the entire crew together.

Here are some shots from the hike.

Then we enjoyed a beautifully decorated feast (thanks, Shayla!)

One of the evenings we had a good ol' fashioned "campfire"/skit night, emceed by Grandpa McCune.  It was so fun to see and hear all his favorite songs and skits.  He is so good at leading those kinds of things and helped me get a glimpse of when he was a YMCA Director!  The kids had a blast and we all laughed hysterically.  Kyle led us in some songs on his ukulele.

And Kyle's mom had a cast signing party with all the grandkids.  Hot pink casts are awesome!

Another great event of the weekend was an Amazing Race/Treasure Hunt style race Logan put together.  We were in teams and had to drive to the nearby lighthouse, a waterfall area, the beach, etc., and solve riddles and clues to find the buried treasure.  He buried an old treasure box full of chocolate candy coins on the beach at the finish.

Christine also put together a picture slideshow of times we've been together in the last 10-15 years.  It was fun to watch them, reminisce and laugh.

It was a fabulous weekend!  The morning we left, the clouds, wind, and rain rolled in, but we didn't mind.  We had a wonderful time playing, talking, laughing, eating (way too much!) and being together as a family.  The kids loved being with their cousins.

On the drive home, we stopped at Grandma and Grandpa Barney's house in Wilsonville.  The Clark's and Barney's came over for a yummy lunch together before we had to make the long drive home.  It was treacherous going through the Gorge (driving rain and winds, hydroplaning, etc.), but we made it home tired and happy.
