Thanksgiving & Kyle's Birthday

We spent Thanksgiving 2009 at Kyle's sister & brother-in-law's house (Maile & Parvin) in Sandy, Oregon. Everyone on Kyle's family was able to be there, except one of his nephews. We had a wonderful time being all together and enjoying great food and games. Lucky Kyle got lots of love and presents having all his family with him on his birthday:). Here we all are together before the kids got all dirty eating and playing!

Christine & Charles (another sister & brother-in-law) made the trip from Logan, Utah. We loved getting to have them stay at our house. Thursday we ate way too much food and had a blast with multiple ping pong tournaments. Friday several of us met at our house then went to Riverfront Park in Salem to ride the carousel, play at the park, and play football. I played three-on-three for the first time in forever and surprised myself at how much fun I had! The kids had a ball on the play ground.

Kyle opening presents. I'll have to update later with the massive Costco chocolate cake we had for his birthday! We had our dinner, then a few hours later ate cake & ice cream, then a couple of hours later had pie & cool whip. Warning, do not try this at home!

Babies & Laundry Baskets

Every one of our kids has loved being in the laundry basket at some point as a baby; wait, they still do! I'm not sure what it is, but it sure is cute! Here's our sweet Skyler at 8-months old taking his turn.

Happy Birthday, Kyle!

Our wonderful daddy and husband turned 35 on Thursday, November 26! Yes, he is a Thanksgiving Turkey this year! Yippee. We love you so much, daddy. We are so grateful for all you do for us. We love to play with you, go to the park with you, jump on you, tackle you, and play the ukulele with you. Here are some of our favorite pictures of you taken in the last few months. You are looking GOOD! Has it really been 35 years?!

"I love to pull on your ears, daddy!"

Six years and more in love than ever. I don't know what I'd do without you, babe! Thank you for your unending support and confidence in me. I could not have asked for a better companion to spend eternity with! YEA!

Chillin' with Skyler.

I am definitely my daddy's son!

Cricket "Parade" & Christmas Tree

Cricket is a major sponsor of the City of Portland's "Holiday tree." (Forget that: it's a CHRISTMAS Tree!) Anyway, before I digress...every year when the tree officially arrives in Portland, Cricket employees participate in a very small "parade", leading the tree through downtown Portland to Pioneer Courthouse Square where the tree is then put into place. This year we decided to join Kyle for the, albeit simple, festivities. The parade consisted of a small marching band, Santa in a Prius (no exercise for the jolly one, please!), the Kink FM car, the Cricket FJ Cruiser, a mass of Cricket employees, and two semi trucks with the Christmas tree. Woo hoo! Even though it was a cold and rainy day, the kids had a great time and did really well. They loved all the attention, getting to see the huge tree lifted with the crane and put into place, and eating way too many green dye-filled Cricket suckers. Yuck! Good times!

When Santa suddenly appeared next to us after the walk, Spencer kind of freaked out. He pulled his stocking cap way down over his face and buried his face into the side of me. Santa bribed him to come out with the promise of a candy cane. Kylene asked why this Santa didn't give the big candy canes like the one we go visit every year. Man, expectations!

Kylene is Five!

Happy Birthday to Kylene Noelani today! We are so thankful she has been on this earth for five years. She is truly a light and joy to have in our home and is a wonderful big sister to her two little brothers. Her smile and eyes sparkling together light up a room and she is helpful, thoughtful, and kind. I don't know what I'd do without her "mothering", always watching over Skyler and teaching Spencer. This week she taught Spencer that when he coughs or sneezes, he should do it into his elbow rather than his hand; he is now doing it like a pro. I love listening to them laying in bed at night talking to one another in their bunk beds. It's amazing what she will explain to him.

When she found out her and Mickey Mouse share the same birthday, she decided she wanted a Mickey Mouse party; then it changed to a Minnie Mouse party, of course! I did my best to make her a Minnie Mouse cake and face, so we could play "pin the bow on Minnie Mouse." She was happy with it and had a wonderful little family party on Monday night (thanks for coming, Logan & Shayla!) and a very happy birthday today.

Happy Birthday, our beautiful girl from heaven!

The Nostalgia of Grape Juice

Despite feeling awful last week, I couldn't turn down the opportunity when my friend called and said she had three bins of grapes that needed juicing and she just couldn't get to it. Was I interested? Definitely! The joy of having homemade grape juice was worth the discomfort!

I started with this...

And ended with 27 of these.

Yippee! The smell of the grapes "juicing" was so nostalgic and took me back to the days when my mom made it and our kitchen floor was a sticky mess. Oh, the good ol' days when mom took care of you. I sure wanted my mommy last week! I guess the homemade grape juice had to suffice:).

Halloween

With a 2 1/2 year old and an almost 5 year old, Kyle & I realized the job of carving is still mostly ours. They chose the design and we did the work while they played around us in the garage. Joy.
Our sweet little giraffe, Snow White, and bumblebee.
Kylene as Snow White. One thing I did manage to accomplish this week was make her costume. Poor girl had to wait until Friday for it to be finished; so patient!

Ward Luau and post Ward Luau

Last Saturday, 24 October, was the Battlecreek Ward Luau. Kyle was asked to be in charge of the program for the evening and he did a wonderful job putting it together and emceeing. For the last month and a half we have been teaching the young women (12-18 female youth group) the Hukilau, a fun Hawaiian hula that was actually created by the LDS Saints in Laie. Kyle also taught the young men (12-18 year old male youth group) the Haka, a Maori war dance. They performed for the luau. Maile, Kyle's sister who has danced and performed the hula for several years, also performed, as well as his niece, Alohi. The bishopric did a hilarious Elvis number from the movie "Blue Hawaii." There was an incredible turnout and the whole evening was a huge success. I'll have pictures to share once I get them from my dad.

Another great part was having all of our family come. Kyle's parents came for the day; his mom played the ukulele and accompanied Alohi for her number. Maile & Parvin came with their family, of course, as well as Logan & Shayla. My parent's also came for the evening. Lots of fun.

And then...

Sunday night about 2:00 a.m. (Monday morning, I guess), when I woke up to feed Skyler, I felt really nauseous. It continued to get worse until I was vomiting and experiencing other unpleasantries. The next morning I decided to cancel the Stake Music Class I have been helping with and when we called a friend who lives right by the church to go hang up a note for us and she said her kids were sick, too, we though, hmmm; coincidence? Then we checked the computer and saw an email from a ward member via our "battlecreek sisters" yahoo group. Her family had it, too. It became apparent something nasty had spread at the luau. By Wednesday, the count of affected families had reached 39! Crazy, huh?

Most people had the vomiting and nauseau, etc., for about a day or two. But a few of us got to deal with it a bit longer. I still am, actually. Yep, it's been a full week now. I have had this unending stomach cramping/pain that has been miserable. Needless to say, I haven't been much of a housekeeper, wife, or mom this last week. I drove to the library and dropped some books off on Wednesday, but otherwise have been nowhere for a whole week. I have been able to get up and move around but wear out very quickly and mostly have been laying around watching my kids' tornado-like effect on my house. Thankfully, Kylene & Spencer have been wonderful about playing together and keeping each other entertained. And the TV has been on way too much this week. We cancelled preschool and the bishopric cancelled all ward activities.

On Thursday night a friend recommended I go on a liquid diet for 36 hours to clear out my system. I decided I would try just about anything, so Friday I drank way too much broth, jell-o water, Sprite, water, and apple juice. The stomach cramping went away which was so nice. But after 32 hours, I was too weak and had to eat, so I had some saltine crackers. Within 10 minutes, the pain was back. So discouraging.

Finally, sometime late Saturday afternoon, I started to feel little breaks in the pain. It has continued to get better, although it is not completely gone yet, but much better. I decided I needed to return to a normal diet as much as possible, to regain strength after hardly eating for a week, so that has helped me have a bit more energy. I am still not good for much, though! I hope after a good night's rest tonight, tomorrow will be a much better day! If not, I think I'll be calling my doctor. My house and kids sure need a mommy!

EZ Orchards Pumpkin Patch

There are three main pumpkin patches near our home (that I know of, anyway) and this year I was "lucky" enough to visit all three. We took the MiaMaids to Bauman Farms for an activity, the preschoolers to Fordyce, and last weekend while the McCune's were visiting, we visited EZ Orchards. The kids loved the attention and all the activities.

Spencer ready to ride. He was afraid of the miniature pony they had at Fordyce Farm and wouldn't even go near it, but was so excited to ride the full size horse. Go figure.
I think their favorite area was these miniature tractors. It was a muddy mess, but Kylene really got moving as she pedaled around and around in the small area. Until she crashed into another tractor, that is. We visited this area twice and definitely spent the most time here.
This picture is for Susan! Spencer on his John Deere.
It took a lot of pushing by the adults. Thanks, Shayla, for helping me save my back!

Skyler enjoyed riding in the backpack and mommy enjoyed letting grandpa carry him! Thanks, grandpa!
"Me love Shayla, mommy", is Spencer's favorite saying since Logan & Shayla lived with us. They were both so excited that Auntie Shayla came with us.
